She seems to have the habit of making a mark in whichever arena she forays into – quite evident from her work record. Starting as an amateur college-going model, her life took a fascinating turn when the golden girl was shortlisted as one of the final five contenders at Miss India 1998 contest, and was adjudged ‘Miss Photogenic’.
Dipannita Sharma Atwal – yes, the name says it all – a supermodel, actor and the very latest addition to her glamorous work designations, a yacht entrepreneur.
Born in Duliajan, Assam to Dr. R C Sharma and Krishna Sharma on 2 November 1976, Dipannita did her initial schooling at Holy Child School, Guwahati, and high school at St. Mary’s, Naharkatia. Her beauty and charm began earning her spotlight when she won three titles –‘The Best Ramp Walk’, ‘Look Of The Year’ and ‘The Best Answer’ at a medical college fest, while she was still pursuing her degree in History Honors at Indraprastha College for Women, in Delhi.
Soon after her famed stint at Miss India contest, the Assamese diva moved to Mumbai on a journey that was sure to get her tons of accolades.
Standing tall at 5’9”, Dipannita attracted a lot of projects from all sections of fashion industry – modelling, commercials, and films. She not only walked the ramp for the famous fashion designers, but has also been the face of many leading brands in the country and abroad.
Her commercial modelling portfolio includes major skincare brands like Palmolive, Dettol, Garnier, and Nivea. Her beauty, fresh appeal and screen presence have bagged her exotic brands like Breguet Watches & Jewelry, for which she was the brand ambassador for five years (2004 – 2009), and DTC Diamonds. She has also endorsed for projects like Jaypee Green. Dipannita is also an ardent supporter of PETA India, recently unveiling the ExtraVEGANza campaign. And, who can forget the fresh Limca – doobo taazgi mein ad!
Dipannita Sharma Atwal has some credible work to her name in film industry starting with her debut movie 16 December (2002), for which she received rave reviews. Although she was considered hot property in the industry with a line of project offerings, this dame chose to remain focused on her first love – modelling.
She has, however, made cameo appearances in movies like Dil Vil Pyar Vyar, Asambhav, My Brother… Nikhil, and Koi Aap Sa (2005). She also has to her credit the award of best supporting actress for Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, and more recently played a key role in Jodi Breakers (2012). Dipannita is now zeroed in on to play a lead role in two Hindi movies: Angrezi Main Desi and a remake of Tamil horror flick, Pizza, by Bejoy Nambiar.
Besides cinema, the diva has also adorned her presence on the small screen as contestant and host in television shows like Har Dil Jo Love Karega, Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, Fear Factor – Khatron Ke Khiladi, MTV Making The Cut, and Piya Kay Ghar Jana Hai.
