Model Interview

"My USP is my smile" – Amrit Sandhu

IAD got to speak with gorgeous Amrit Sandhu this week!
With a perfect amiable smile and girl-next-door looks, Amrit has not only self achieved commercial success in modelling but has won a million hearts across the country. Excerpts from a tete-a-tete where she shares some of her hidden talents and success secrets. Enjoy! 🙂
Tell us something about yourself and your foray into modelling?
I was born and brought up in New Mumbai. (My parents are from Amritsar, Punjab.) I did my schooling at St. Mary’s, Vashi, and my Bachelors in Mass Media (BMM) at S.I.E.S College, Nerul. After graduation, when I was interning in the creative department of an ad agency, I was encouraged to try modelling. I was bit hesitant first but eventually got my first portfolio shoot and soon it all worked out well. I started posing for the camera alongside my PG in Advertising and Communication from EMDI, Bandra. I never thought I’ll be a model but, here I am! 🙂

Big names/brands you have modelled for?
I have done print ads for Fashion@Big Bazaar, Cadbury Celebrations, Pantaloons, Airtel, Tikona Broadband, She Sanitary, ET Now, Kings 11 Punjab, Reliance Digital, Tata Nano, P. C. Chandra Jewellers, Axis Bank and Ariel. My recent ad shoot for TATA Docomo will be out soon!
I did my first ad film for Alpenliebe. Though I had a very small role, it gave me the zest to pursue modelling further. You can see me in Telenor, MTV Style Check, Sprite, Lotus Herbals, Reliance HDTV, Schwarzkopf, McDonalds McFlurry, Fair & Lovely, Fogg Deo, Head & Shoulders, Pond’s Femina Miss India Promo, Velvet Soap (Sri Lanka) and Amulya. My latest TVC currently on air is Morphy Richards. Fogg and Reliance Digital gave me great recognition as a model.

How is it like being a model? Is there any agency representing you?
Ah, you get to see yourself on big, big hoardings and you feel really good! Besides that, it’s a tough job. You’ve to maintain yourself, keep your skin beautiful and healthy. I’m a foodie but work out at gym to stay fit. 😉
I’ve been doing freelance modelling for the past three years. I was never associated with any agency and got all the work by myself. I’m however planning to join one soon.
What are your strengths and weaknesses as a model?
My USP is my smile. I managed the entire Reliance Digital campaign with just a smile! (laughs) I don’t consider height as a weakness but I wish I were a little taller (I’m 5’6″), then I would get to walk the ramps for international fashion shows as well. 🙂 (the usual requirement is 5’7″-5’10”)

Tell us about your hobbies?
I love painting, drawing, sketching and anything that stirs my creativity. I also like reading, travelling, listening to music and watching movies. I am a big fan of Ranbir Kapoor! My favourite movies are DDLJ, Rockstar, Barfi, and The Notebook.
What is the best compliment you’ve ever received? I’m sure you’ll get a lot of them…
Sure, I do get a lot of compliments! (laughs) Yeah, people say I am beautiful, gorgeous and the best compliment would be that I am a very versatile model. 🙂
What next, movies?
I’m not really looking for movies right now. Cinema is a difficult industry to be in, very competitive and very challenging. I just want to be recognized as a model. I’m happy doing commercials and enjoy modelling. Let’s see how the future turns out!
If you could be successful in another profession, what would it be?
I am a creative person and have studied Advertising. So when my face looks overused, I would be in an ad agency.
The 25-year-old has been in the modelling industry for 3 years now!

How does your family feel about you being a model?
I come from a conservative Punjabi family. So initially I had to convince my parents when I chose modelling as a career. Now when they see my work on TV or print, they feel truly happy and proud! They support me a lot.
A piece of advice for aspiring models?
Nothing is impossible; dreams come true when you put in the effort. Hard work always pays off!
Amrit, thanks for your time, and wish you the best in all your present and future endeavours. Always keep smiling!
