She was apparently scouted when she was 14 and when her friends at school found out about her, they said she was a foot model. Her classmates apparently wore the brands that she models for now. She was also called “Pa*k*”by them. Did this get to her? No. Because Neelam Gill is the first Indian to be cast by Burberry.
She might only be linked to India by her decent and not her work or life but she is Indian nevertheless. She says how Burberry made her skin darker because they were proud that she was Indian and that they were making her the Burberry girl.
Gill’s grandparents were born in India and she looks like a complete Indian. However she doesn’t think she would have gotten this opportunity or gotten chosen in India for how she looks. She believes it was Christopher Bailey who made this happen for her and that without someone who wields his kind of power there is no the mainstream will accept you.
Gill is very vocal about her thoughts on women’s rights and equality and adores Naomi Campbell for her ethics and speaking up about social issues.
We probably need more Neelam Gills in the fashion world in other parts of the country to let them know Indian women are beautiful and has what it takes to go international in the truest sense of the word.
